Can You Powder Coat Chrome Wheels?

We get chrome wheels in every week, usually peeling at the lip or pitted from a few winters. The answer to “can you powder coat these?” is yes, with one condition that decides whether the finish lasts.
Why powder won’t stick to chrome
Powder coating bonds to bare, slightly textured metal. Chrome is the opposite: a hard, mirror-smooth plating over copper and nickel layers. Spray powder over it and it looks fine for a few weeks, then flakes off in sheets because it was never attached to anything. Shops that skip the stripping step are the reason “powder coated chrome wheels” has a bad reputation.
How we do it
- Tires off.
- Chrome removed. The plating layers are stripped off the wheel down to the aluminum. This is the step a normal aluminum wheel doesn’t need, and it’s what adds cost and time.
- Inspection and repair. Chrome often hides pitting and curb damage. Bends, cracks, and gouges are repaired — pricing on our wheel repair page.
- Coat and cure. From here it’s a standard job: powder in the booth, oven cure, remount and balance, and our lifetime adhesion warranty.

What to replace chrome with

Can you powder coat over chrome?
Not directly. Chrome is too smooth and too hard for powder to bond to. The chrome has to be removed down to the aluminum, then the wheel is coated like any other.
